Nirvana: 10 Facts You Didn't Know About In Utero
1. The Original Title For In Utero Was "I Hate Myself And Want To Die"
Kurt Cobain’s initial title for the album was I Hate Myself And Want To Die. He explained his reason for the album title to Rolling Stone, “I’m thought of as this p*ssy, complaining, freaked-out schizophrenic who wants to kill himself all the time, and I thought it was a funny title. But I knew the majority of people wouldn’t understand it.”
Instead, "I hate myself and want to die" became a go-to sarcastic remark for all those asking Cobain how he was, and thankfully it was still used for the song of the same name.
