Nirvana: 10 Facts You Didn't Know About In Utero
7. Pennyroyal Tea Was Written In 1990
One of the most popular songs of In Utero, Pennyroyal Tea was actually written more than a year before Nevermind. This and Smells Like Teen Spirit were both played for the first time at a show at the OK Hotel in 1991. Kurt Cobain didn’t think the song was good enough to be included on Nevermind, and it was scrapped from the record.
The band continuously tweaked the song and played it occasionally between 1991 through 1992, before being released as part of In Utero. The song was supposed to be released as the third single from In Utero, but was scrapped after Kurt Cobain’s death in 1994, as the B-side of the single was "I Hate Myself And Want To Die".
