Some fans have speculated that Cut a Hole evolved from an earlier track entitled "Say the Word," but there's never been any solid evidence to support this. The phrase "say the word" does appear in the lyrics of Cut a Hole, which might give us a clue about the two songs being connected in some way. Cut a Hole is one of the eeriest song Radiohead have ever written. The guitar work is unsettling, the synths are dark and marauding and the drumming is unpredictable. With this as a backdrop Yorke's falsetto voice sounds even more haunting and delicate than usual as he sings of ghostly apparitions. Could songs like Cut a Hole signal a return to the darkness of albums like Kid A and Amnesiac? Here's hoping. They were awesome.
