A craving for sweetness continues with this entry, the third single from Maroon 5’s aptly titled fifth album, V. Directed by David Dobkin, the music video is a homage to Dobkin’s 2005 hit film, Wedding Crashers with the band mates replacing Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn as the titular troublemakers.
The group crashed all too real weddings for the filming, making it up to the respective couples by performing acoustic renditions of She Will Be Loved for each of the newlyweds’ First Dance. Along with proving that most LA weddings welcomed their presence, Maroon 5 continued to prove what a dominant force they are on the charts. Sugar was the 68th song in music history to remain in the Top 10 of the Hot 100 for 20 weeks. It also made it 3 for 3 in singles from the album to reach the Top 10 at the time.
The music video has been accused of hiring actors to help stage weddings, discrediting the reported legitimacy of the ceremonies. Publications such as Rolling Stone and Cosmopolitan pointed to the use of several known actors and models in the scenes as proof. Regardless of its realism (or lack thereof), the music video remains a major online favourite
