4. Wasting Light (2011)
With guitarist Pat Smear rejoining the band for recording, the three-guitar piece leading the Foos provided some amazing rhythmic blends, and the stripped back, grittier sound achieved from recording in Grohl's garage meant Wasting Light had a unique feel.
Wanting to capture the rock and roll essence of their earlier days, the band recorded on now-outdated analogue equipment, and called upon producer Butch Vig in order to obtain this. Vig was responsible for producing possibly the best known album Grohl has ever been involved in, Nirvana's 'Nevermind'.
Due to the equipment, the band couldn't afford mistakes, so they rehearsed an incredible amount, making the mayhem they could cause seem strangely tight and controlled, like handling a ball of raw energy. And this made the live shows a must-see, as the songs were rehearsed to be recorded live, and hold up exceptionally well when heard in an arena.
This return to roots sound produced an incredible album. With stand out tracks such as 'Rope' and 'Walk' leading the way for an album that doesn't seem to have any weak links, 'Wasting Light' acts as a refreshing return to the near-perfect form they had in their early days.
