Ranking All 9 Foo Fighters Studio Albums From Worst To Best
3. Foo Fighters (1995)
A personal outing for the first album under the Foo Fighters name as Grohl recorded all instruments himself and wrote every song himself, some during his time in Nirvana. This album is a quiet affair, but that works in its favour, and separates Grohl from his previous work, meaning this passion project could present him as the multi-faceted musician he is.
With Grohl recording the album for fun, there wasn't any pressure on Grohl, as the Foo Fighters name gave him an anonymity, and with that, a freedom. Grohl has described this experience as cathartic; a way of handling his emotions and recovering after Kurt Cobain's tragic suicide.
The personal nature of the project and the hectic recording process, with Grohl running from room to room and instrument to instrument, worked incredibly well. He had been sitting on these songs for years, and here he was recording them in 45 minutes. Even the lyrics seemed to be written incredibly fast, with Grohl admitting to writing some 20 minutes before recording, but found that the spontaneous thoughts and feelings that came out of him, in hindsight, were incredibly meaningful.
