Ranking All 9 Foo Fighters Studio Albums From Worst To Best
1. The Colour And The Shape (1997)
This is the album that launched the Foos proper, and the one that every album after it will be compared to.
This album has a powerful theme due to Grohl's personal issues, going through a divorce and the process of healing. This is where Grohl's leading man voice takes shape, with the fantastic "One last thing..." part of 'Monkey Wrench' highlighting this with a bang, whereas 'Everlong' is brimming with emotion at finding a new love and being lost in it, and makes for amazing listening.
A lot of emphasis was put on the basics of the songs, with producer Gil Norton and Grohl stripping songs back from the start, then pushing to make them the best they possibly could be. Even 'Everlong', objectively the best song the band have ever recorded, started with Grohl playing and writing it on an acoustic guitar by himself.
The album feels like a therapy session, presenting conflicting emotions by mixing up-tempo songs and ballads to perfectly incapsulate the feeling of heartbreak, whilst also leading to some optimistic revelations, and it's a must listen not just for Foo Fighters fans, but for fans of music. It is a withstanding example of the Foos at their peak, and it is breathtaking.
