Saves The Day - Saves The Day Album Review: All 11 Tracks Analysed
8. Supernova On track eight, "Supernova," the band seems to be trying to re-capture some of the bold, expressive creativity of "Freakish," a career highlight song off of 2001's Stay What You Are. "Supernova" does not approach those heights but it does manage to be a very well placed break in this mostly fast paced album. The song does shine instrumentally however, mirroring the staccato, melodic bassline and walking pace drum beat of "Freakish." The tight performance and precise musicianship of the rhythm section provides the song with an extra punch for a ballad. The instrumental composition and subdued vocal performance gives the song an atmosphere of darkness and a level of desperation rarely heard throughout the album up to this point. 9. Verona One of the weakest songs on the album, "Verona" sounds as if it was misplaced from the band's "Trilogy" albums. The songwriting style whose every permutation was already explored and exhausted across those three albums is revisited in "Verona." This aspect, in addition to generic lyrics in the chorus overpowers another high quality musical performance and the consistently excellent sound production making "Verona" a forgettable re-hash of old ideas. 10. Ring Pop Song ten, "Ring Pop," returns the to the high energy, lighthearted mood of its first half and acts as part one of a sunny, joyful end to the album for both artist and listener. The song's lyrics express feelings of world wise acceptance and happiness; of making peace with events that are out of one's control. Conley sings about all the seemingly hard luck breaks that could have prevented him and his loved one from coming together with assurance, on lines such as, "Born on opposite coasts / for the two of us both / knowing in 20 years / we would not be alone." The joyful mood is aided by a swift moving verse in which Conley's agile lyrics dart through the music, the singer's vocals once again aided by the hasty tempo. The song is an effective example of the band's current sonic form and a great soundtrack to a sunny drive with some friends.
