3. The Punk Image
John Lydon may have been the mouth piece of the Sex Pistols and the punk movement as a whole but Sid Vicious was the trend setter and the member of the band that everyone wanted to be like. He was rough, he was tough and he was unashamedly image conscious. Every photograph was an opportunity to portray his Punk rebel persona to the masses. It was said that Sid Vicious looked his best when he was at his worst, and we challenge you to find a photograph anywhere that defies this statement. His posing and his gesturing have become so iconic in fact that he has been emblazoned on T-shirts, posters, album covers and canvases for the last 3 decades. It drove his band mates mad but this was perhaps the earliest example of a record label identifying an opportunity to market one of their talents to its audience. It clearly paid off and is still evident in the images of musicians today.
