Sid Vicious: 5 Reasons For Enduring Legacy 34 Years After His Death

2. Sid and Nancy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZp3meyWVm0 Sid's life was such that it was inevitable it would eventually be turned into a movie. Thankfully the script for Sid and Nancy never made it into the hands of Hollywood, instead making its way to the big screen courtesy of Alex Cox (Repo Man), a man who lived in London in 1977 and was very heavily involved in 'the scene' as it was. Depicting Sid's life in all its glory as well as all its shortcomings, the film was described as a cash in by Sid's ex band mate John Lydon in later years, although Cox has stated that Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten) was quite happy with the film until he had a falling out with the director. Perhaps the biggest criticism of Sid and Nancy was that it glamorised the lifestyle Vicious lived - sex, drugs and rock and roll - but what more does an audience expect from a biopic of someone like Sid Vicious? If anything the film should be slapped on the wrist for making facts out of legends but beyond that it is an outstanding documentation of those crazy years in the late 1970's and early 1980's that gave birth to a genre of music that will be forever imitated but never be truly duplicated. A must see for fans of punk and for anyone wishing to see a breakout performance by Gary Oldman as Sid and Chloe Webb as a much more palatable than real life Nancy.
