Sonisphere 2014: 10 Really Obscure Metallica Songs You Need To Request

10. Escape

In 2012 Metallica performed their album 'Ride The Lightning' in it's entirety, as part of the Orion Music + More festival, which they themselves had founded the year before. As part of this occasion (the first time the band had performed the 1984 album in its entirety) it was well known that James Hetfield particularly disliked the song 'Escape'. His dislike was so strong, in fact, that the band had never previously performed this track willingly and Hetfield even joked before the song that they should ignore it. The dislike is meant to be based around the fact that 'Escape' was written through label pressure to include a "hit song" or radio friendly track on Metallica's LP. Subsequently the album version of the song was never actually released as a single in any format and sort of remained an "elephant in the room" for the band. No doubt many Metallica fans, aware of this fact, will want to request 'Escape' for the very reason of annoying James Hetfield. There is also the very real possibility that a lot of fans will want to take the opportunity to hear this track in person and decide upon the differences between the live version of the song and the original. Its unclear as to how the voting procedure for these tracks will work, whether Metallica will offer a selection of tracks and ask participants to select their choices, or whether the box will be left blank. Its also unclear as to how many votes a song might need to be selected and if Metallica will release that information afterwards?
