The Mercury Prize: Who Got Snubbed?

S.P.Y. - What The Future Holds

SPY Having been released just after the nominations for the 2012 awards, it's been a long, hard wait for S.P.Y. otherwise known as Carlos Lima and one which has sadly ended in disappointment. Hospital Records is one of the hottest labels around at the moment but for me S.P.Y. is the towering beacon of light for the label. What The Future Holds was something I overheard in the stock room at HMV, it was everything I'd ever wanted in music, I took it straight down to the shop floor to share with the world. Alternating itself between beautiful organic mixes, orchestral implementation and at times some very dirty bass lines, WTFH profits from everything that is wonderful about modern day music and for many earned the praise that it deserved at numerous other music ceremonies. The fact that it didn't even get a nomination is heart breaking. It would be arguable that because Lima was born in Brazil he would not be applicable, but having lived in London for 10 years, that's certainly good enough for me.
