The Mercury Prize: Who Got Snubbed?

Bring Me The Horizon €“ Sempiternal

Sempibmth This was supposed to be the year. Having been hotly tipped for the 2011 nominations and snubbed (though they arguably contained an Australian member back then), everyone thought this would be the year for the opinion splitting northerners. But alas it once again wasn't to be. Further pushing forward the elements of electronica and hints of ambience that they introduced for the band's previous release, along with a matured, more focused vocal performance from controversial frontman Oliver Sykes were not enough to grab the attention of the panel once again. You need only watch the band's latest performance from Reading Festival to know what they're all about, and how the public who appreciate them respond in numbers. As previously mentioned, the album shows a matured sound that has come a very far stretch from their dethcore origins, without every losing what you would call their signature sound. It is without a doubt a love or hate album, unlike your typical nominations it is not a sound that will appeal to everyone, perhaps that is part of the issue here? Or maybe lyrical themes that use the word C***? It's really hard to tell, but you can't help but feel that Mercury's snobbery regarding anything associated with the word "heavy" is really pushing itself too far now.
