The Wildhearts: 10 Tracks You Need To Call Yourself A Fan
9. The Only One
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xf8utkd18NcOn a few select occasions during The Wildhearts’ career, someone other than frontman Ginger (who is also the band’s only constant member) has taken on lead vocal duties. On 1997’s Endless Nameless Ginger shared the singing with both former bassist Danny McCormack (on Anthem) and former guitarist Jef Streatfield (on Urge).
But during the sessions for last album ¡Chutzpah!, released in 2009, current bassist Scott Sorry was given the frontman’s microphone on not one but two tracks. One, a cover of Jim Carroll’s People Who Died, was left off the main album but made it onto the companion EP ¡Chutzpah! Jnr.
However, The Only One, which Sorry wrote, was included on ¡Chutzpah!, and also served as its lead single. Ginger himself said of The Only One: “This is one of my favourite songs on the new album. I never get tired of listening to it. And the lyrics are classic.”
As an interesting aside. The Wildhearts now officially have two bass players, though they don’t perform together, like some Spinal Tap or Freebass nightmare. Scott Sorry is a recording member of the band (though sadly it appears there will be no more Wildhearts’ albums) but they can also call on former Cardiacs’ member “Random” Jon Poole, who has performed enough times to be classed as the fifth Wildheart. Poole will be on four-string duties for the forthcoming p.h.u.q. tour.
