Throwback: 10 Best Metal Albums Of 2000

8. Electric Wizard - "Dopethrone"

A lethal cocktail of doom and stoner metal, Electric Wizard blew the minds of the masses when they dropped "Dopethrone" way back when.

Renowned for outdoing themselves on every release, "Dopethrone "is no exception. It's possibly the most beloved doom metal album of the post-Sabbath era and, despite drawing huge influence from Black Sabbath themselves, was the release that showed that Electric Wizard had the style, substance and tenacity to forge their own path to success. They push their own boundaries of down-tuned, growling, grinding, monolithic doom metal to previously unseen heights.

The introduction to tracks being spoken word pieces from B-movies only adds to the haunting atmosphere and three-part colossus tracks such as Weird Tales are now vintage Electric Wizard traditions. They never exceed their pace, sludging through the record, yet somehow maintaining the intensity and ferocity needed to strike an impact.

The obscenely heavy title track raised the bar for doom metal in the turn of the millennium, meaning bands hoping to follow in Electric Wizard's footsteps needed to seriously up their game in order to compete even remotely. As such, the heights of "Dopethrone have yet to be reached by another band in this quirky sub-genre of metal.
