Tool: 10 Albums We Waited For Longer Than The New Album

4. Black Sabbath - 13 (~18 Years)

It's weird to think that a band with such a tumultuous history has maintained a fairly regular release cycle over the years. Prior to 2013's, err, 13, the longest gap between Sabbath albums was 1983's Born Again and 1986's Seventh Star. They had also only officially split the band once, when, in 2006, Iommi, Dio, Butler and Appice formed Heaven & Hell.

By the time of 2013 though, things were a different story. Despite all the tribulations of the band, the cavalcade of members, Iommi's illness, label disputes, and the mountains of cocaine, the Godfathers of heavy metal were finally able to go out on the own terms.

It wouldn't be an easy ride though (this is Black Sabbath after all), with original drummer Bill Ward declining to participate due to "contract disputes" and Ozzy being Ozzy. Sabbath would go on to recruit Rage Against the Machine drummer Brad Wilks and Ozzy's backing band drummer Tommy Clufetos for the studio and live dates respectively.

In 2017, the band announced that Black Sabbath had split up for good (hopefully they won't go all Rolling Stones on us). As sad as it is, it's better than having Forbidden as the swansong to your legacy.
