Tool: 10 Albums We Waited For Longer Than The New Album
2. Angel Witch - As Above, So Below (~26 Years)
The New Wave of Heavy Metal was a very interesting and important time for heavy music. One of the earliest 'fad' movements (similar to the djent and nu metal movements of recent years), NWOBHM spawned a plethora of breakthrough bands, such as Iron Maiden (remember them?), Motörhead, Def Leppard, Diamond Head and Angel Witch.
For their time, Angel Witch were a hot property. Signing with EMI on the back of a compilation appearance and their 1980 self-titled debut album achieved cult status with its dark interpretation of heavy metal that flirted on the side of early black metal.
The subsequent years were not kind to the group. With band members coming and going almost yearly, there was never a consistent line-up to tour with, and visa issues prevented the band from breaking into America.
Fast-forward to 2011 though and mainstay Kevin Heybourne has assembled a new band of merry men (including Carcass/Napalm Death guitarist Bill Steer) to release a new Angel Witch album. Whilst not having quite the impact as the debut, 2011's As Above, So Below represents a throwback to a different time with their haunting brand of traditional heavy metal.
Their return was capped-off with a second-stage headline slot at Bloodstock 2011.
