The landscape of the music industry has changed over the last decade. What was once dominated by flannel and denim wearing rock gods has been replaced by laptops, ridiculous outfits and twerking. 2013 was an interesting year for music, dominated by the likes of Robin Thicke, Pharell and guys in fox costumes. While some might argue that guitar driven music is on the downturn, there has been no shortage of great Rock records in recent years. In this feature I am going to look at 5 albums from this past year that represent Rock N Roll and show that the genre is still alive and relevant. These aren't necessarily the "definitive" Rock albums of 2013 (except maybe for the top 2), but instead a collection that spans the whole genre of "Rock". If you like guitar based music, I highly recommend giving these a listen.
5. The Bronx - IV
The Bronx have been constantly evolving since they released their debut in 2003. With their 4th self titled album, they have finally hit their stride. Starting off as a hardcore punk band, the Bronx have harnessed their talent and manic energy to become a full blown hard rock band. Think heavy Foo Fighters mixed with the looseness of The Riverboat Gamblers. The album opens with the buzz saw assault of "The Unholy Hand" that features the chorus of "Are you the Anti-Christ or the holy ghost?/Do you want to die or just come real close?". Fair to say, it will get your heart pumping. While The Bronx can make you want to break stuff, they also know how to slow things down while still maintaining an edge, such as on "Torches". With its killer guitar riff and drum beat, the album closer "Last Revelation", is not only my favorite song on the album, but one of my favorite songs of all time. You know a song is great when you can't make up your mind between playing air-guitar or air-drums. I end up switching throughout the song.
