U2: 10 Best Album Tracks

6. Seconds

Seconds was inspired by the global threat of nuclear war in 1982 during the recording of the War album. It is the first U2 song that The Edge sings lead vocals on, with Bono joining in after the second verse. They then both sing the final verse together.

The final verse of the song about dancing to the atomic bomb was a reference to a single called Drop the Bomb by Trouble Funk, who were on the same record label as U2 in 1982.

During the middle of the song there is a break for 11 seconds which features the sampling of a 1982 documentary, Soldier Girls. This was about women training for the US army which Bono heard on a television during a break in the recording studio, immediately deciding to record it.
