U2: 10 Best Album Tracks

7. A Sort Of Homecoming

The first track off U2’s fourth album The Unforgettable Fire and their first working with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. A Sort of Homecoming highlighted the change in direction U2 were taking making the record more atmospheric, compared to their previous album, the overtly rocky War.

Prior and during the recording of The Unforgettable Fire, Bono became an avid reader and read the works of poet Paul Celan, who inspired the title and the song itself. The song deals with many different themes surrounding faith and the loss of it and the ultimate recapturing of it once again.

Although performed live regularly after the album’s release A Sort of Homecoming has ultimately been performed less than ten times in the past 30 years, due to Bono struggling to remember the lyrics to the song.
