Valentine's Day: 20 Greatest Love Songs Of All Time

7. €œYour Song€ - Elton John

http://youtu.be/mTa8U0Wa0q8 There€™s a photo of Elton John peering at the audience over the top of a pair of sunglasses, sunglasses edged in blond curls. This photo sums up why I am unimpressed, bored even by the theatrics of today€™s artists who attempt similar sartorial shenanigans without the talent to back it up (meat dress, thy name be Lady GaGa). Okay. Rant over. €œYour Song€ is so striking because it€™s everything that you wouldn€™t expect a love song to be. The narrator stumbles over himself and even changes his mind on images: If I was a sculptor, but then again, no/Or a man who makes potions in a traveling show. It€™s like listening in while a very awkward person confesses their love, or a very normal person who isn€™t a songwriter. There are no grand allusions or even clichéd images and the narrator is a little apprehensive about the song (I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind that I put down in words/How wonderful life is while you're in the world). Self-deprecation is pretty rare in love songs. Neediness€ not so much (€œI Need Love€, €œYou€™re All I Need€, €œI Need You€).
