Valentine's Day: 20 Greatest Love Songs Of All Time
7. Your Song - Elton John
http://youtu.be/mTa8U0Wa0q8 Theres a photo of Elton John peering at the audience over the top of a pair of sunglasses, sunglasses edged in blond curls. This photo sums up why I am unimpressed, bored even by the theatrics of todays artists who attempt similar sartorial shenanigans without the talent to back it up (meat dress, thy name be Lady GaGa). Okay. Rant over. Your Song is so striking because its everything that you wouldnt expect a love song to be. The narrator stumbles over himself and even changes his mind on images: If I was a sculptor, but then again, no/Or a man who makes potions in a traveling show. Its like listening in while a very awkward person confesses their love, or a very normal person who isnt a songwriter. There are no grand allusions or even clichéd images and the narrator is a little apprehensive about the song (I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind that I put down in words/How wonderful life is while you're in the world). Self-deprecation is pretty rare in love songs. Neediness not so much (I Need Love, Youre All I Need, I Need You).
