17. "At Last" - Etta James
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-cbOl96RFM Remember the uproar when Beyoncè sang At Last at President Obamas first inauguration and Etta James later said that she couldnt stand her and had no business singing her song? Well technically, it wasnt James song. At Last had been around for almost 20 years before she even got her hands on it. The song was written for the film Orchestra Wives in 1942 and Glenn Miller did the original film recording. The result is a slow, swing tune. It sounds good, but when the violins kick in slow and sultry at the beginning of James version, were lost. She owns the song. From the first at last to the last at last she wrenches every bit of emotion from the song with her bluesy vocals and phrasing.
