Where Are They Now? - The Headliners Of Download 2003
2. Sunday Main Stage Sub-Headliner: Zwan
Blink and you'll miss them, Zwan was the shimmery pop rock supergroup formed following the implosion of standout 90s icons The Smashing Pumpkins. Formed of guitarist/vocalist Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, the pair were joined by Chavez guitarist Matt Sweeney, Slint guitarist David Pajo and A Perfect Circle bassist Paz Lenchantin. They would release only one album, 'Mary Star of the Sea' in January 2003.
A volatile line-up from the word "go", Zwan dissolved three and a half months after their Download appearance. Since then, none of the members of the band recall fond memories of their time in the group, with claims and accusations of drugs, relations between band members, adultery and even phone hacking all being argued between Corgan and the rest of the band. As recently as 2017, both Sweeney and Pajo had their criticisms towards Corgan and their time in Zwan.
So of course Zwan never returned to Download. In fact, only Corgan and Chamberlin have ever come back. At the final Download before 2020's COVID pandemic, The Smashing Pumpkins - having reformed in 2006 - played as sub-headliners to Tool on the Saturday, with Corgan leading the fray and Chamberlin in his latest stint with the group, having rejoined in 2015 following a six year hiatus.
