It's hard to find a respectable publication that hasn't been throwing praise at the trio known as London Grammar this year. It's also hard to place their music into one established genre, given that it incorporates elements of both pop and electronica, combined with Hannah Reid's often sombre vocals. Having initially begun playing in bars during their time at the University of Nottingham, the threesome began posting songs on YouTube after their graduation before releasing their first EP 'Metal & Dust' in February. The tracks featured on the release, including the eponymous 'Metal & Dust' and 'Darling Are You Gonna Leave Me' began to build a following for the group, which has grown massively in the ten months since. These ten months have seen them play at a host of festivals, release a #2 album and make an impact with an array of further songs, including 'Nightcall' and 'Wasting My Young Years'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkeDBwsIaZw http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZYw0MQp_fI
Honourable Mention - Lorde
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlcIKh6sBtc If you've been anywhere near a radio in the last couple of months or so, you've inevitably heard 'Royals', the song by New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde that has been dominating the airwaves and has reached #1 in 5 countries. Given the sheer amount of other material that she has already recorded but has yet to officially release outside her homeland, expect the seventeen year old to be a regular fixture throughout 2014.
