10 Amazing Things That Have Been Crowdsourced

4. Scanadu Scout

I've written before about Star Trek inspired technologies in a previous article, in particular the Tricorder X-Prize. The Scanadu Scout is pretty much as close as we've gotten to anything on that show and is a real step forward in medical technology. It's mainly for the home market and interacts with a smart phone. It measures a variety of things including heart rate, temperature, blood pressure and ECG. With the X-Prize in place, this is a market that will only evolve with time. The Scout was picked up in the international press and received quite a bit of attention for it, and was covered in Forbes, Time and USA Today. The Scanadu Scout went up on indiegogo and 8523 backers saw the request for $100,000 but instead ended up donating $1,664,574 instead. The Scout was launched at CES 2014 back in January to popular acclaim. The company aim to ship in March 2014 and has been proclaimed as the world's first medical tricorder. Scanadu themselves are working towards the X-Prize and while the Scout doesn't meet the requirements, I'm sure that the funds generated from the device will be redeveloped into even more powerful pieces of equipment.

I'm a pop culture addict. Television, cinema, comics, games - you name it, and I've done it. Or at least read the plot synopsis on Wikipedia.
