9. Thud!

Following Going Postal (remember this book for later) in the Discworld series, Thud! was published in 2005 and explores Discworld tensions between the trolls and dwarves. Tensions between dwarves and trolls are regularly highlighted as a simmering sub-plot throughout many books in the Discworld series, but Thud! is one of the rare occasions where it gets to take centre stage.

In Thud!, a dwarf is seemingly murdered at the very beginning of the book, and dwarven fingers are automatically pointed at a troll culprit. However, a trail of confusing and cryptic clues are slowly unravelled to reveal a much larger plot at the heart of the 'murder'.

The internal canon and intertwining plot lines between all the books is exceptional, and Thud! is a great example of this. Thud! feeds off previously established facts about Discworld happenings such as the Battle of Koom Valley and the fierce reputation of regular character, Commander Vimes. Because of this, Thud! nestles comfortably into the Discworld saga and is the perfect piece in the puzzle for a lot of Discworld fans.
