10 Cosmic Dangers Threatening Our Planet

5. Gamma Ray Bursts

Gamma rays have extremely dangerous properties. A gamma ray is an electromagnetic radiation of extremely high energy, and with very high frequencies and short wavelengths. However, they have an afterglow effect as the longer wavelengths arrive slightly later. If Earth would find itself hit by such a ray, the ozone would be depleted, and with nothing left to shelter us from the Sun€™s UV rays our planet would be left as one lifeless husk for a very long time, with no guarantee that life would come back into existence in any form. Scientists are all but certain that such an event has already occurred in the past 500 million years on Earth.
