2. Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805)

Who Was He: British Royal Navy flag officer, famous for having one eye and one arm. Career Highlights: Nelson was instrumental in many of Britain€™s early victories in the Napoleonic Wars against France. He won a decisive victory over Napoleon at the Battle of the Nile, to prevent France from controlling the Mediterranean. He subsequently led Britain€™s navy to its greatest victory in the Battle of Trafalgar. Context of Last Words: At the Battle of Trafalgar, Nelson was shot by a French sniper and fell on the Victory€™s quarterdeck. Thomas Hardy, captain of the Victory, comforted him with fans and lemonade, as he took three hours to die. Last Words: €œThank God I have done my duty€ drink drink, fan fan, rub rub€
