One of the most fascinating and beautiful worlds in the history of video games, Rapture is the brainchild of one Andrew Ryan (the antagonist of the game), who wanted to build a post-World War II society that wasn't forced to conform to the societal standards of helping others and, well, not being a douchebag. Rather, it promoted wanton capitalism without the intervention of government or religion, with the world's smartest and most industrious being able to thrive like never before in this huge underwater expanse. Everything costs money in Rapture, so to even make it there, you'll need to pay for an oxygen supply, but upon arriving, it's difficult to argue with the overwhelming power of the cityscape. Somewhat resembling New York City if it were dragged underwater, the city has a lot to offer the go-getter, though is also rife with poverty due to the lower-class residents receiving virtually nothing in terms of social security. Furthermore, Ryan made sure Rapture cut ties with the outside world, so it is not known to many outside of its community during the events of the first game. Maybe just a fly-by visit, then.
