10 Genes Named After Fantasy Icons

2. Tribbles

Okay, trekkies; now it's your time to shine. Tribbles are are fictional alien species that take the form of small, non-intelligent lifeforms that have been seen in the original Star Trek series and its later continuities. For non-tekkie nerds, they're basically Pygmy Puffs. Tribbles homolog 3 are named after the cells of flies that will often multiply uncontrollably, much like the fluffy, round organisms seen above that reproduce at a rapid pace as well. Look at how many there are! The reality is slightly less cuddly, however, as it's a bit like cancer in flies, but not quite as malignant. Scientists are still trying to figure out just what its effects are, whether they cause any other mutations in the fly's DNA that could otherwise be dangerous later on in its life cycle or if it is simply some freak accident that has no effects on the fly's short life. Perhaps it is synonymous with the Thor gene, that it hinders a life cycle, much like a cancerous gene? We may be onto something here!
