Pika pika! Following a trend of chipper-sounding proteins and genes, the classic mascot of the Pokemon franchise, Pikachu, was the inspiration for this particular protein. Pikachu is a lovable electric-type Pokemon, known for its quick speed and powerful electric abilities. This protein retains the same concept that Pikachu does, hence it's cute name: it is a protein essential for eye-to-brain transmission. This is accomplished by electrical impulses being 'zapped' between dendrites and synapses to turn thoughts into motor skills, and is what we call 'hand-eye coordination'. Some experts think that Pikachurin could someday be used therapeutically to treat debilitating eye disorders.
