Thor is the Norse god of thunder and lightning. He lives a much longer life than humans do, much like this gene's rumored function. This gene is another one found in flies. Studies have been conducted, and while the definitive function is still a bit foggy, they are pointing towards the gene's purpose having some sort of adverse effect on the aging of fruit flies. It is present in all stages of a fly's life cycle, but whether it shortens or extends the life cycle has yet to be proven. The prospect of an extended life is most likely why the name Thor was chosen for this gene. That, and the fact that it's the only gene that is worthy of wielding Mjölnir. * *Okay, that was a fib.
