3. Botched Qing Dynasty Fresco
Artist: Various
Location: Chaoyang, China The government officials placed in charge of restoring this Qing Dynasty fresco are probably regretting taking art advice from Walt Disney, after losing their jobs because of this fiasco. Despite $161,000 being invested into this 'restoration' of a Buddhist Temple's fresco, it ended up looking more like bad fan art for Disney's Mulan than a graceful reminder of a bygone era. The restoration by an unauthorised third party company was considered so bad that "inspection and law enforcement" groups were sent over to prevent further work being done. Li Zhanyang, one of the archaeologists of Henan's Culture Relics Bureau chandised the people behind the work, calling them "uneducated, unreasonable and ignorant of the law."
