4. Lifesaver Fountain
Artist: Niki de Saint Phalle
Location: Duisburg, Germany This colourful statue was met with equal parts disgust and hilarity after its unveiling in 1991. Featuring bright, bold patterns and a totally bizarre subject matter, the Lifesaver Fountain gets funnier the more you look at it. For starters, the giant bird itself is almost nightmarish in appearance, and its design is charmingly unrefined. It's the rotund woman "hugging" the bird in a somewhat suggestive position though, that's given the Lifesaver Fountain it's dubious reputation. Constructed using industrial waste and other rubbish, the Lifesaver Fountain acts as a depressing reflection of the saying, "you are what you eat."
