3. Ghost Of The Train Driver
It's a solid bet that most people will have experienced the intransigent, white knuckle feeling of terror when tentatively tip-toeing through the Haunted House at the funfair - a majority of Newcastle residents will recall feeling such naked horror at the Hoppings on the Town Moor. Nothing invokes an extreme sense of fear like trundling along in the darkness and being confronted by a dangling plastic skeleton or a badly dressed fairground worker posing as a zombie. But nothing can compare to the unnerving dread that must greet anyone that walks through an archway entitled "Dead Mans Crossing" in Bensham, running under the main railway line between Elysium Lane, Bensham Crescent and Dixon Street. Legend has it a train driver - overcome with remorse at causing an accident in which some people were killed - hung himself at the entrance to the arch on the Bensham Crescent side. And, if you're unfortunate enough to walk through that way on at Midnight on New Years Day, you could encounter the stomach-turning sensation of bumping into the driver's lifeless, hanging corpse. This is commonly accepted story that is ingrained into Bensham folklore, and one that people from the area have grown up hearing - but you'll have to travel there and see for yourself if you're still skeptical...
