10 Horrifying Ghost Stories That Happened In Newcastle-Upon-Tyne

2. Whey Aye, Where's Your Eye?

If you're unfamiliar with the Cooperage, it's the unmissable large, historical, timber-framed building on the Quayside which dates back to the 14th century and is rumoured to have been constructed using an old ship that was recycled from the Tyne. As a notorious hotspot for paranormal activity in Newcastle the Cooperage is a prime location on the itinerary of any serious Geordie ghost tour around the city and boasts its own resident pub spirit in the form of one Henry Hardwick. As the story goes, Hardwick was slaughtered by a press gang, people roamed pubs seeking men to join the Navy during the Napoleonic Wars, for trying to escape and was beaten to death before having his eyes gouged out. His spirit has frequented the alleyway beside the pub ever since, typically manifesting late at night with gaping black holes where his eye sockets should be and visible body wounds from the violent assault he was subjected to before his death.
