10 Incredible Animal War Heroes

6. Chips

Chips was a mutt donated by the Wren family to the US Army in 1942. Americans donated over 11,000 dogs to the military to help with the war effort and of all of them, Chips stood out.

The day was 10 July 1943. American soldiers were pinned by Italian machine gunners on a beach in Sicily. Chips broke free from his handler and, completely ignoring the hail of bullets headed his way like a deranged action hero, charged at the gunners. He caught one machine gunner by the neck and the other three promptly surrendered, presumably after pissing their pants in fear.

He was awarded the Silver Star and two Purple Hearts. These were later taken away after some people grumbled about animals getting the same commendations as humans. Anyway, it was the ‘40s.
