10 Incredible Animal War Heroes
5. Judy
Judy survived two shipwrecks and remains the only dog to ever serve as a prisoner of war.
The Japanese took Singapore in 1942. British naval ship, HMS Grasshopper fled, setting sail for Indonesia. It was two miles from safety when it was bombed and sunk by Japanese planes.
Judy and the sailors survived and found themselves marooned on a small desert island with neither food nor water for two days until Judy sniffed and dug up a fresh water spring at low tide.
The men commandeered a Chinese junk and sailed to Sumatra where they inadvertently wandered into a Japanese camp and got taken prisoner.
They were moved around and one of the men registered Judy as a prisoner of war to prevent her from getting shot. They shared their food with her and hid her from their Japanese captors whenever things got hairy.
