10 Mind-Blowing Pieces Of Evidence That Proves Lost City Of Atlantis Was Real

9. Shape Of Thera

To move on to the more specific features, Plato provides us with a helpful description of the shape and size of the metropolis of Atlantis. He describes it as being a circular island with a mountain in the center and several concentric rings of land surrounding it, with passages of water in between each ring. There was a channel cut out of the rings that went from the sea through to the island in the center.

Scientists have attempted to reconstruct what Thera looked like in the distant past, before its famous eruption in the 16th century BCE. There are a few different ideas (it’s not exactly an exact science, after all), but most reconstructions have depicted it as having one island in the centre with a circular landmass surrounding it (and a mountain in the middle of the central island). There was also a gap in the surrounding landmass, creating a channel from the sea to the little island in the centre, just like Plato’s description. The only difference is that Thera just had one circular landmass, rather than several.

In addition, the size of Thera roughly matches the diameter Plato gives for the metropolis of Atlantis – about 12 miles.
