On one of the best episodes of the Experience, Chuck Palahniuk and Rogan were talking a lot about censorship in Literature and how that affects Palahniuk’s writing. The author justified the need to limit censorship on his grisly stories - in this case, they were referring to the visceral short story involving dangerous ways to masturbate, Guts - as they give reader’s permission to relate their own experience to what they are reading.

In one of the most shockingly tragic stories ever shared on the podcast, Palahniuk recounts how after he gave a public reading of Guts, a member of the audience approached him and informed him of her similar tale.

When this woman was seven years old, she would place a warm, vibrating pillow and unknowingly had discovered masturbation. Innocently, when she next went to a Brownies meeting, she told all of her friends to try this newly discovered pastime, and for the first time in her young life, she had become a popular kid.

Several weeks later, while having a Brownies get together in her family home, her mother found out about what her daughter had been encouraging her friends to do, and began to beat her daughter while calling her a ‘whore.’ The seven-year-old had no clue what she had done wrong.
