10 Most Insane Prison Breaks Of All Time

5. Escape From Alcatraz

Even the FBI admitted that Frank Lee Morris and John and Clarence Anglin's escape for the infamous Alcatraz prison in 1962 was "ingenious", and Hollywood seemed to agree since they turned it into a film fronted by Clint Eastwood.

In all fairness, it was ingenious. The plan started with the three prisoners crafting fake heads made from soap, toilet paper and real hair, which they placed in their beds to trick the guards into assuming they were sleeping.

With the decoys in place, they dug tunnels in the adjacent cell walls and burrowed their way to an unused service corridor, gaining access to the prison roof via a ventilation shaft. After climbing down to the ground, they made a raft from raincoats and contact cement, MacGyver style, and fled the island.

Nobody realised the trio had escaped until the next morning, and after no traces of them were discovered on the nearby Angel Island or during the 17-year FBI investigation which followed, it was concluded that they drowned in the bay.

The conspiracy theorists, however, will tell you otherwise.
