The Watergate Scandal reached the very heart of the American political system and shook it to its very foundations a nation and an idea built on the premise of freedom and liberty had a leader whose administration had committed illegal offences of harassing and bugging the offices of the Democratic Party. Such was the public outcry at President Richard Nixons involvement in the scandal, impeachment became inevitable. Fearing the worst, he voluntarily left office on August 9, 1974, leaving his deputy Gerald Ford as leader and, in the process, Nixon became the first and only US president to resign from office. Nixon Resigns was the simplistic headline chosen by The Washington Post such was the powerful nature of a president voluntarily giving up his office. Perhaps Nixons worst legacy, however, is the extremely annoying use of gate seemingly after every scandal in the media since but maybe thats just a personal gripe...
