2. Are Homeless People Practically Invisible To Us?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6jSKLtmYdM Staying with the issue of homelessness now, this experiment attempts to take things a step further, suggesting that not only do we not help homeless people, in a lot of instances they are practically invisible to us. This video was uploaded to YouTube by New York City Rescue Mission and shows several people walking along the street past homeless people, barely even noticing them on their way past. Except these arent homeless people... They are in fact members of the persons own family dressed up as homeless people. In particular they are family members who the person has a close connection with as their interviews within the video attest to. What the experiment does well The video makes its point brilliantly, essentially making us realise that if we dont pay enough attention to homeless people to be able to recognise one as a member of your own family, then clearly youre not paying enough attention to them. Possible Flaws The people perhaps might have recognised some similarities between the homeless person they passed and one of their family members, but given that theyd have known their family member isnt actually homeless they therefore would probably have been quick to dismiss this thought.
