Unlike most pirates, who grew up poor, Daniel Montbars was a member of a wealthy family from Languedoc, France. He was an educated man who grew up reading about the atrocities the Spanish Conquistadors committed during their conquest of the New World. The Spanish also killed his uncle in a battle at sea. These factors led Montbars to despise all things Spanish.

During his career, the French buccaneer wreaked havoc on Spanish settlements and was known to be quite cruel to his captives. His signature method of torture included removing his victim's intestines while they were still alive. He would then nail their insides to a nearby post and proceed to beat them. He was also known to hit his prisoner's backsides with a burning log — often after removing their innards. These methods helped him earn the nickname 'Montbars the Exterminator.'

It's unclear if the Spanish were able to extract any measure of revenge, as Montbars' death is undocumented. He was last heard of around 1707.
