10 Mysterious Disappearances You've Never Heard Of

2. Renee MacRae

Currently standing as Britain's longest-running missing person's case, Renee MacRae and her three-year-old son, Andrew, disappeared in 1976 on a busy stretch of road in Scotland.

On Friday 12 November of that year, Renee left her home in Cradelhall and drove with Andrew and his elder brother, Gordon (9) to the house of her estranged husband. There, she dropped off Gordon and continued on, driving south on the A9, ostensibly to visit her sister in Kilmarnock. It was later revealed that she actually planned to see William MacDowell, a married man with whom she had been having a long-term affair.

Renee and Andrew never made it. A train driver spotted their burnt-out car in a lay-by. Police discovered the vehicle empty apart from a rug stained with blood which matched Renee's type. Despite extensive searches, both at the time and subsequently, no trace of Renee or Andrew has ever been found.

As recently as 2021, the now 80-year-old MacDowell was charged with their murders, with the trial set for later this year. This is one case on this list which might, at last, be solved.
