10 Mysterious Disappearances You've Never Heard Of

3. Ettore Majorana

The second renowned scientist on our list of unexplained disappearances, Ettore Majorna was a theoretical physicist, born 1906 in Catania, Italy. He disappeared on 25 March 1938, while travelling by ship from Palermo to Naples. We know that Majorna purchased a ticket for the journey, and reports suggest that shortly beforehand he had withdrawn all of his money from his bank account, yet he never arrived at his destination.

What makes this account especially fascinating, is that it seems this is one case in which the disappearance was planned.

In a note sent from Palermo to Antonio Carrelli, director of the Naples Physics Institute, Majorna wrote: “I made a decision that has become unavoidable. There isn't a bit of selfishness in it, but I realize what trouble my sudden disappearance will cause you and the students. For this as well, I beg your forgiveness, but especially for betraying the trust, the sincere friendship, and the sympathy you gave me over the past months.”

Despite his family offering a reward of 30,000 lira, the mystery remains unsolved.
