There were many men in history who could have said this exact pick-up line and gotten away with it, because they were kings and could pretty much do what they wanted. You may recognise this particular king as Charles II, one of the most notorious womanizers in history. In his 55 years, he had around 14 mistresses and at least 13 illegitimate sprogs. Politicians would fight to please the monarch by introducing him to attractive young ladies in the hopes that they would become the new flavour of the month. Meanwhile his poor wife Catherine, who was never able to have children, actually had to employ her husbands favourite mistress as her personal attendant. He was such a relentless skirt chaser that even his kingly status did not protect him from mockery. The witty Earl of Rochester wrote some damning (and not to mention highly hypocritical) poetry about the king, including lines such as: No matter how weak and slender be the string, Bait it with whore and it will hold a king.
