10 Richest People Who Ever Lived

4. Tsar Nicholas II - £180bn ($271bn)

Tsar Nicholas II ruled the Russian Empire between 1894 and 1917 before he was deposed by the Bolsheviks - and during that time he built up huge wealth. Having already inherited significant funds and assets from his father, Nicholas II expanded the Russian Empire further than it had even gone previously and benefitted greatly from foreign trade - meaning he was worth around £180billion ($271billion) at his height. However, Nicholas II lost a great deal of wealth during the Great War and both he and Russia were on the brink of economic collapse when the Russian Revolution deposed the Tsar in October 1917.
