10. Taking Regular Naps Will Kill You

In April this year, a time-wasting little story started flying around the internet via news aggregator apps, Facebook and Twitter and courtsy of various online columns, blogs, newspaper sites and such, quoting a study of around 16,000 people indicating that if you regularly take naps during the day, you are more likely to die earlier than if you don€™t. The non-science behind this nonsense was something to do with naps causing an inflammation somewhere or other. Naturally, the Mail Online was one of the guilty parties, gravely informing people that €œadults who nap are more likely develop respiratory issues€ (sic). Of course, the study being quoted was actually suggesting that the need to take regular naps may, possibly, perhaps, be an indication of a medical issue. Maybe. The idea that the naps themselves are creating widespread health problems across the length and breadth of the world was exactly the kind of scaremongering claptrap that the original research wasn€™t suggesting. In fact, it specifically states that it€™s €œunaware of any evidence to show an association between daytime napping and inflammation." Just to make it clear that sleeping isn€™t killing us all in our€ well, sleep. Perhaps even more concerning is that rumours continue to fly around that The Daily Mail is a real newspaper. Now that€™s a fake story that€™s dangerous to our children.
