Animal Kingdom is absolutely beloved by tourists eager to take sight of lions, tigers and... dragons?!

Across the prominent Animal Kingdom hoarding lays engravings of all the animals you would be likely to encounter within its four walls, but right in the middle is a bust of a dragon head. This is not an accident.

Broadly speaking the Kingdom is made up of two distinct areas; animals that exist today and animals that have existed but are now extinct, such as the Dinosaurs. The original design included a third section entitled ‘Beastly Kingdomme’, which was to focus on legendary and mythical creatures such as dragons and unicorns.

Due to funding and budget cuts, this area of the park was disbanded at the very last minute after work had already begun, which explains the previously unexplainable ‘dragon cave’ and the demonic bust in the logo. A more modern reference to this land is the yeti included within expedition Everest, which was intended to be one of the original beasts to be featured.

Imagine the fun we could have had in a Disney-inspired imagineer-driven delve into myth and legend - this really is Disney’s lost world.
